Voweletics™ Components and Activities


           
All Voweletics™ instruction is designed for short learning segments followed by a variety of activities as detailed below.  This fun, interactive format completely engages the student and promotes accelerated learning.  Voweletics™ not only provides essential phonetic reading skills, but also creates an atmosphere where students are eager to learn.  The process is simplified, systematic and fun!  All students will experience the success critical in becoming an eager and confident reader

Voweletics™ Valuables Kits


Each student has a Voweletics™ Valuables Kit.  The kits are to be used with Voweletics™ instruction. The kits serve as an invaluable aid and provide tools for decoding. Included in the Voweletics™ Valuables Kit:

Readersville Residents Charts  

   

  • The Voweletics (Characters representing all the vowels) live in Readersville where they share their adventures and help to teach the vowel sounds and rules.
  • The flashcards provide word associations for the 18 different vowel sounds.
  • Students memorize the guide words and vowel sounds forming the foundation for the Voweletics™ reading program.
  • Flashcards have creative characters with their corresponding guide words and associated vowel sounds on every component.
  • The five short vowel characters reflect admirable qualities in which students identify with their own life experiences.
  • The five short vowel characters are the authors of the Readersville Letters and Readersville Readers, which are leveled, decodable readers that go with the program.
  • Assorted vowel rules, all set to songs, are printed on the back of the Readersville Residents chart for quick and easy reference

WHAT TO DO Chart Cards

  • Three What-To-Do Charts provide easy mapping for the word decoding process.
  • The individual charts are used when an isolated skill is being presented in the program.
  • The grids, color-coding and pictorial prompts simply the learning process and add an element of fun.
  • Lyrics to the "rules songs" are printed on the back of each What-To-Do Chart Card for review and easy reference.

Smart Chart

  • The Smart Chart is easily transferred to upper grade level students and teachers for consistent instruction.

Songs

  • 23 creative songs, exposing students to various genres of music, were created for the Voweletics™ program.
  • The songs are entertaining and educational.
  • Memorable lyrics and melodies turns the task of learning to read into an enjoyable experience.
  • The songs have lyrics which relate to the character drawings, guide words, and vowel rules.
  • Each song is introduced as it coincides with the new vowel sounds and rules presented in the lessons in a simple progressive way
  • Each student receives his or her own CD for home use which is easily downloadable into Ipod or Mp3 players.

Student Workbook

Students are guided step-by-step through their color-coded Student Workbook. Progressive Voweletics™ principles are presented explicitly and systematically to facilitate better comprehension. Bright, visually appealing, interactive pages are engaging to the young student. .A variety of exercises are provided to practice the student's improved reading skills. Periodic assessment tests monitor the student's success along the way. Included in the Student Workbook:

Word Lists

  • Initial phonetic concepts are introduced and practiced in isolation.
  • Each Word List focuses on one Voweletic Character, a Guide Word, the WHAT TO DO Rules and an array of decodable words incorporating the specific phonetic skill being taught.
  • Students actively participate in the learning process using high-lighters and the program ’s color-coded system to identify and isolate the vowels in words.
  • Students practice the LOOK!   THINK!  READ!  method taught in the program.
               –LOOK at the vowels in the word first.
               –THINK the vowel pattern in the word determines the correct vowel sound to use.
               –READ the word using the chosen vowel sound.
  • The use of over 2,000 isolated words provides students with systematic practice recognizing vowel patterns and decoding words while building a better vocabulary.
  • The Word Lists are in both in the Student Workbook and in the Voweletics Web Site with accompanying read-along sound files for student fluency and vocabulary development.

    WHAT TO DO Rules
  • Vowel rules are set to music and transferred visually to graphs that are repeatedly used throughout the program.
  • WHAT TO DO Rules simulate the internal thinking process the reader must go through in order to determine correct vowel sounds in words.
  • After the vowel patterns in words are identified by the reader, the WHAT TO DO rules then help the reader to select which vowel sound is correct.
  • The WHAT TO DO Rules are visually charted in WHAT TO DO Charts.
  • The charts facilitate easy recall of the vowel rules making learning easier.
  • The charts are a part of many program components and frequently appear throughout the  program, constantly reinforcing reading principles and learned skills.            

 

Word Family

  • Students are provided with a list of all consonants and consonant blends to use with a word chuck or family.
  • Newly learned phonetic skills are readily transferred to improve spelling skills

Sort it Out

  • After students learn a new phonetic skill, they engage in a fun, new spelling activity  called "Sort it Out"
  • The program gives the students a set of consonants and color-coded vowels. They sort the tiles to form words given by the educator.
  • Each Sort it Out isolates and practices a specific phonetic skill.
  • Spelling tips are provided to aid the educator.
  • Sort it Outs are reused later in the program for practice adding endings to word

Endless Endings

  • Letter tiles are provided with common suffixes and rules for adding suffixes to root words.
  • Rules for adding endings are provided for easy reference

Smart Chart Review

  • Smart Chart Review is an assessment tool. 
  • The student applies cumulative phonetic decoding skills to read words correctly
  • The student uses rule grids to help determine the correct vowel sound in chosen words.
  • The student independently places a check mark in the correct rule grid.
  • This serves as a tool to identify individual student needs.
  • This process requires the student to use the correct internal thinking process to learn proper word decoding skills.
  • Students have fun using their bingo chips to help them with this exercise.

"Look and Say" Word Phrases

  • The student practices reading high frequency words.
  • The student progresses through 22 sets of phrases to achieve reading fluency.
  • Once the student attains a prescribed and testable level of mastery, they progress to the next level.
  • Progress is charted in their Student Workbook.
  • Look and Say Word Phrases are available in our Voweletics web-site with accompanying read-along sound files for fluency practice

Academic Certificates

  • Certificates of Achievement are located in the back of the Student Workbook.
  • Certificates of Achievement are awarded after learning each WHAT TO DO Rules.

The wide array of student activities provides opportunities for additional group lessons or individual reinforcement. The website is intended for use by all mentors involved with the student's education.  Teacher resources for extension activities and cumulative review are readily available.   • Student Skills Charts provide individualized tracking of student progress.

Spell Well

  • Ten Spell Well lessons are available on our website
  • Students are given 15 words to spell.
  • The web instructor gives each word, uses it in a sentence and then gives a vowel clue to prompt students in applying their vowel rules in spelling.
  • Spell Well provides an opportunity for students to transfer the vowel sounds and rules into improved spelling skill

Martian Madness

  • Students learn to spell in a fun way we call “Martian Madness. ”
  • Pseudo words provide a means of testing students' knowledge.
  • “Martian” words will be spelled correctly if they correctly apply the phonetic tools provided in the program.  
  • The Martian Madness DJ from Planet Mars reads the words to students over the radio.
  • The mysterious music and fictitious words captivate the student’s attention. They love this exercise!!!
